How Would Repair A Hollow Door Hinge

  1. Hi,

We've recently moved into a house where the pinnacle hinge of the bathroom door was loose making it difficult to close as information technology was communicable at the top. I was able to tighten the screws of this swivel against the door which resolved the problem a few times simply now the screws are just not gripping annihilation as it is a completely hollow door.

I put in some hollow door plugs which I thought might assist the screws grip better merely that has fabricated it worse and the hinge is now coming away from the door.

Are in that location any fixings I can employ to tighten the hinge back to the door?

    Many thanks

  2. if totally hollow try mitre fix on the hinge and door one part like super glue one role a spray other wise move hinge on door and re chop in.
  3. failing this yous volition need a new door
  4. mitre bond will Non work, you need to motion the hinge. only solution
  5. Thanks guys. However, if I move the hinge won't I encounter the aforementioned problem as it'southward a hollow door? It doesn't seem to have any solid timber in it for the screws to grip...
  6. so you lot demand a new door. you tin can pick them up very cheaply from howdens, about £15
  7. cut a hole in the top of the door slide a peice of wood inside of side timberframe and spiral throu problem solved
  8. Sounds similar the person that fitted the door took too much off the width. Hollow doors accept a sparse stile for the hinges and a thin stile with a cake of wood for the lock on the opposite side. The stile on the hinge side should be thick enough for the screws for the hinges, unless someone has severely cut down the door to fit the opening rather than buy the nearest size.

  9. You could glue a small dowel/matchstick in the hole.
When it'southward completely dry, drill a pilot hole & use a coarse threaded screw (chipboard screw). this should hold on a lightweight hollow door.
  10. Knobies got information technology about right.

The proper way would exist to accept the whole stile out and supplant with a more substatial one.

Just drill a large pigsty in the acme the width of the insert, chisel out the arcs to brand information technology square.

Insert a piece behind the existing - just a longer piece and then y'all can drill and fix information technology higher up and below where the swivel is located. Now information technology's fixed, you lot can prepare your hinge every bit normal.

Yous will need to take information technology sticking out at the top so you can hold it to first fix it. Cutting that bit off when finished.

Y'all should drill through the outer(existing) and your new piece and countersink and insert screw right through to the top insert piece.

    Mr. HandyAndy - actually

  11. hinges dont pull out screws UNLESS they are binding.

Set up the cause of the problem

  12. hinges dont pull out screws UNLESS they are binding.

Fix the crusade of the problem

Distressing, mate. Just if there is only a wisp of wood to fix to, the screws volition not hold a continuing door.

    Mr. HandyAndy - really

  13. Thank you guys,

I don't really desire to buy a new door every bit that volition hateful having to actually buy five new doors and then that the peak landings' doors are all the same. And hanging v doors? Well, that'due south across the realms of my DIY skills.

I really like some of your ideas and volition give them a go (and so will probably have to get a new door) Ha ha ha!

    Thanks again.

  14. Equally I started to read your letter I was thinking about cut a foursquare hole in peak of door and sliding downward a slice of timber and noticed further down others gave the same answer!
  15. as an bated

most internal hinges are desighned for no7 screws which are threaded all the way up i use 1 1/iv" sevens for "hollow" doors

i would also become for wooden block in the top but would have information technology sticking out by about 6" gum on information technology and so you tin can lever it against whilst yous screw the swivel into position
otherwise the screws may push the woods abroad

    big all

  16. if the reply (truely) is that there is but a wisp of wood into which to put the hinges

set up the problem. namely remove the wisp of woods and install a new stile, glue it in place

it all the same occours to me that if youve cut that much off a hollow door y'all volition also have the same problem with the latch/lock, a wisp of wood
